I applaud your optimism ;-)

Bugs like #864798 should never occur. While Debian stable/stale is
filled with known bugs, crashes or potential data loss bugs should not
exist. Given that btrfs-convert support was dropped for sid, and that
this propagated to testing it is now possible to advocate to
ftp-masters for dropping it from 4.7.3-1 in stable--which doesn't have
the latest rewrite. Crashes and potential data loss bugs are a
greater deficiency than missing functionality. Unless one of these
bugs exists during freeze, the deficient package propagates to
stable...not to mention that all of our downstreams can up end up
getting stuck with buggy software.

If by fall 2018 no rewrites of btrfs-convert have occurred, and if
upstream is willing to support it, then I will fully support reverting
my commit. That much I'm sure of, but May 2018 might be reasonable :-)
Of course, it's ultimately up to Dmitri!

What do you think about the idea of having a variant of btrfs-progs in
experimental with any/all experimental functionality enabled?

Cheers,
Nicholas
