I tried it with just one image (100_4626.jpg) and I still get a webpage
with:
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 67108864 bytes exhausted (tried to
allocate 1173987753 bytes) in
/usr/share/gallery2/modules/exif/lib/exifer/exif.inc on line 545

I don't think there's any reason to attempt to allocate 1GB of memory. 
My limit of 64MB should be perfectly acceptable.
