I am using debian buster with network-manager.
I will test the symlinks later, I guess this will be the problem.
Currently there are some issues with gnome (mate) packages in buster anyway.

Yep. Gnome renders the title bar client side. gtk3-nocsd should prevent
this, but for gajim it does not work. I suspect that the preloaded
library is somewhere lost between python and the gtk libraries loaded by
python.

I will see when I have time for more debugging. Are there any obvious
things which could fail?
I think something like reacting on network-managers ifdown and not on
ifup or similar may be the problem, because else I would expect it to
reconnect at least after some retries.
