severity 119006 wishlist retitle 119006 Please clarify that raw and -raw are not the opposite thanks control robot programme
As stated in my last e-mail, I think the documentation should be more
verbose in stating, that
stty raw
and
stty -raw
are not related. The current documentation indicates, that "-" negates
a setting, which is clearly not the case for "raw" (I haven't checked
other compound entries).
Background: Some programmes (e.g. perl-modules) assume that they can
safely switch to "raw" mode (e.g. for controlling special characters)
and later undo this behaviour with "-raw". Since, e.g., "istrip" is not
set again, in some terminal windows entering umlauts no longer works.
While those bugs are clearly not the fault of coreutils, I also
assumed (probably alongside the authors of those programmes) that the
method was indeed correct. Only after having been pointed out to the
contrary I now see that the documentaition of stty does indeed not
claim this behaviour. But this statement is not very clear and maybe
overread.
Greetings
Helge
