To fin4478: the upstream commit is trivial to cherry-pick onto 4.12.1, if your goal is just to gain control over the logging you could try that (as I've done with good success). The error you got in attempting to package 4.13 is unrelated to this bug.
I'm not sure what the point was of filing #891284: it looks like a candidate for merging with this bug.
