Ooookay, so this is me with a bit of egg on my face...  The log I sent
in my first message showed the test suite of the imgif test program
failing; however, this means that the test program itself *succeeded*
in loading the images in the bad order, and the test suite did not
really expect this success.

So, yeah, sorry for the confusion; the current versions of imlib2 and
giflib look fine from here, too.  Thanks for your work!
