Apparently this might be being worked on in the debhelper backport itself (not sure exactly how. Apparently Mattia is working on it?)
Which would at least mean not having to change a whole load of other packages (and it's not like this particular fix would make it back into stretch in this instance anyway, but as a general principle, versioning >= FOO~ is a good idea)
