the compression=method setting in a watchfile is ignored when a tarball is repacked because Files-Excluded matched (and not because --repack was requested on the commandline). In this case the compression method of the downloaded tarball is used for the repacked one. Could you please change uscan/mk-origtargz to a) always respect compression=method (includes an update for mk-origtargz(1)) and b) please default to xz (as dpkg does) when compression=method is unset instead of using gzip or the compression method of to-be-repacked tarball.
