I noticed that upgrading to Java 9, as testing recently did, hosed my (self- compiled Sage installation : the jmol 3D viewer could not longer start, for lack of a suitable Java installation : see https://groups.google.com/d/msg/sage-release/333nWF3BtIU/6UD9YA4sBQAJ for the original bug report. * What led up to the situation? Upgrading Java to Java 9 via apt-get dist-upgrade (following testing). After the upgrade, Sage's 3D jmol viewer couldn't start. * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? Manually reverting to Java 8 (via update-java-alternatives --set java-1.8.0-openjdk-amd64) allows Sage's 3D viewer worked correctly. See also https://trac.sagemath.org/ticket/25026#comment:15 for (little) more detail. * What was the outcome of this action? A working Sage's 3D viewer. * What outcome did you expect instead? A working jmol viewer using the default Java installation (i. e. Java 9)... (Possibly unrelated) note : I also noticed that Java 9 version does not offer a default-java-plugin package.
