it would also enhance Debian's POSIX conformance.
It would not--POSIX does not disallow the . syntax.
Note that the discussion in 604242 is wrong: coreutils will only fall
back to the . syntax *if there is a . which is not in a valid username*.
Usernames with .'s will work perfectly well as-is.
