protobuf 3.5.2 is available in experimental and it will be soon uploaded to unstable (once we complete rebuilding all the reverse dependencies and evaluating its impact). During a test rebuild of all packages depending on libprotobuf-dev, your package failed to build with this error message. [libprotobuf FATAL google/protobuf/stubs/common.cc:79] This program was compiled against version 3.0.0 of the Protocol Buffer runtime library, which is not compatible with the installed version (3.5.1). Contact the program author for an update. If you compiled the program yourself, make sure that your headers are from the same version of Protocol Buffers as your link-time library. (Version verification failed in "google/protobuf/any.pb.cc".) terminate called after throwing an instance of 'google::protobuf::FatalException' It could be an easy fix by setting the minimum version of protobuf-compiler and libprotobuf-dev to force it to use the newer version. It may even work with a simple rebuild. Please make sure it is ready for the transition.
