I didn't. Given the diverse methods to reach various upstreams, contacting them is not feasible for me. What I try to do though is recognizing cases where other distributions (e.g. Yocto or PTXdist) would benefit from patches, designing such patches in a way that should be acceptable to upstream and tagging them as such. So from my pov, the upstream tag says "this problem affects any distribution shipping this package, not just Debian, and the patch is applicable for them as well". After contacting upstream, you usually indicate that by marking the bug as "forwarded". Hope this helps Helmut
