I never used Docker, so I didn't try your patch. Would it not be easier (and more useful to others) if you instead helped to add docker support to autopkgtest? Sbuild already supports the autopkgtest backend so adding docker support to that would not only enable docker support for sbuild but also for general testing purposes. Bug #747909 seems relevant.
