Thanks, that makes a lot of sense to me. I retract my second in message #13, but I'd be happy to review a patch that provides a more targeted carve-out to support existing practice without making the problem worse. I also would be happy to see a separate thread to discuss expanding supported packages that can be put in build-deps, for example as an email thread in debian-boot@ or as a wishlist bug against dpkg with debian-boot and a...@packages.debian.org cc-ed. If I understand correctly, it's a little different from build-time deps because there is not a standard way to install a udeb or deb on the build system. Thanks and hope that helps, Jonathan
