BTW, I was confused because firefox has:

Recommends: libavcodec58 | libavcodec57 | libavcodec56 | libavcodec55 | 
libavcodec54 | libavcodec53

and I thought that this list applied to firefox-esr, but actually
it did not have such a Recommends line (which was unexpected).

Yes, too much work. But since libavcodec57 is co-installable (and I
hope it will remain this way at least in the near future), I think
that it is easier to stick to it. And at the same time, I could switch
to firefox-esr from strech, allowing me to get security updates:

Package: firefox-esr
Pin: release n=stretch
Pin-Priority: 900

Again, I hope that there will be no conflicts in the near future.
