this is a bug in the nagios-plugins programs that don't properly set
the locale, all of which have been resolved in the latest version of
the nagios-plugins packages in etch and beyond.
if you don't want to upgrade out of sarge, a simple solution is to put
export LC_NUMERIC
LC_NUMERIC=C
in your init script.
in the meantime i've done some bts filing with your bug and a similar
one reported a while back.
