I am pretty sure that I used the appstreamcli tool to validate the appstream file and it didn't show any errors back then. At the moment https://appstream.debian.org/sid/main/issues/freecol.html shows only warnings. Why are they fatal? In my opinion GNOME Software app should fallback to the desktop file if it encounters any serious issues. At least the icon would show up this way. When I run appstreamcli validate /usr/share/metainfo/freecol.appdata.xml in Buster, I get four errors and one warning now. Even the reverse domain-name is an error... I accept patches to fix this.
