Thanks Frédéric, your findings are very interesting and I could indeed think of a more solid way to compare the test images. Unfortunately FLIF is not in a good shape in general, and I filed a removal request for it as it has multiple unresolved CVEs and upstream is unresponsive: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=903600 I'll try to fix this issue anyway, but I doubt FLIF will be part of the next Debian stable release.
