First, I must confess that the whole post-lpr printing world confuses
the hell out of me.  You mention three related packages, and there
are easily a dozen more.  How do they fit together?  I haven't been
able to find any TFM on the web or in the packages themselves that
would give me the big picture.

Are ppds completely independent of drivers?  That is, can I just grab
a different ppd and drop it into /etc/cups/ppd and use it with the
existing driver?  Because I tried that; I apt-get sourced hp-ppd
and copied the ppd for my specific printer.  The result was:

1/ I got many more features to select from in the web configuration page.

2/ Printing a postscript file didn't work at all, it just dumped the
raw postscript as text.
