Only today I had a look at this and I couldn't reproduce it. I installed sddm and defined it as the default login manager (I was prompted to do so during the installation, then I installed fish and set it as the default shell using chsh. Finally, I restarted the system and logged in from the sddm login screen. Alf, Are you still seeing this bug you reported? (maybe it was solved elsewhere... sorry for taking so long to look) I'm also running debian unstable.
