I believe there's something else going on. I do get completion of hostnames (not from AVAHI, though) and of filenames following a hostname with a colon. Are you sure you have rsync and bash-completion installed? My intention was to ask if you were still getting long delays between the pressing of the TAB key and the displaying of the completion (probably not, because AVAHI completions are disabled nowadays).
