I really value the intent to package this piece of software, but for me it is hard to understand why after two years of the ITP, still nothing has happened.
For starters, it should be easy to just pull the code from the Nextcloud PPA over at Ubuntu <https://launchpad.net/~nextcloud-devs/+archive/ubuntu/client>, which is also linked from the Nextcloud website, that is, it comes closest to being an official package endorsed by upstream. Having a native deb would be clearly advantageous ove the AppImage, as the latter does not provide file manager integration, automatic upgrades or system wide installation. Johannes
