Users new to GNOME and possibly to Debian in general may be accustomed to have the content of ~/Desktop shown in their workspace. This does not happen in GNOME, (one of) the default desktop environment(s) in Debian, unless one has the appropriate extension installed on the system. While it is as easy as installing gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons, newcomers may not yet be able to find their way to it, or even be aware it exists.
