Maybe after buster, but probably no. For years I did have coreutils run
tests on build, but test failures were far too common due to false positives
caused by idiosyncratic autobuilder configurations.

Ok, fair.  FWIW the autopkgtest that's been defined here appears to be
fairly reliable in Ubuntu: http://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/packages/coreutils

You have a lot fewer platforms. :) OTOH, it may become more reasonable as some of the more obscure platforms are going away.
