Eric was always very keen in accepting suggestions, if you could create and issue or PR it would be great, so that we could simply use the upstream source directly. I also agree on the solution to simply bypass configure with the configure override. The upstream's solution is very simplistic, and as long as all it does is makefile selection than it's even cleaner.
