Package: pristine-tar
Version: 1.46
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

around an year ago I had some private communication with Antonio
Terceiro and Tomasz Burchert about a possible different implementation
of pristine-tar, which in my opinion might decrease the dependence of
pristine-tar on the implementation details of a lot of older tar
versions. My idea was briefly discussed, but then, it seems, everybody
(including me) forgot about it.

Since it has crossed my mind again for random reasons, I am not filing a
bug, so that it doesn't fall again into oblivion.

Basically, the idea is to change the way pristine-tar deltas are
recorded: instead of keeping an xdelta between the tar generated by a
reference tar version and the pristine tar, a format inspired by jigdo
is adopted. Such format is basically a template with "holes" where the
actual files in the tar have to be replaced. At archive reconstruction
time one only has to fill in the holes.

For more information and a proof of concept, see here:

  https://salsa.debian.org/gio/pristine-tar

I am available for helping to develop this idea and possibly implement
it. But I do not know Perl, so I cannot touch that directly.

Thanks for your work on pristine-tar!

Giovanni.
