thanks Steve. In fact I had prepared, and even uploaded to NeuroDebian
http://neuro.debian.net/pkgs/python3-pynwb.html
the 1.0.3-1 package which strips python2 support. For Debian proper I
am just waiting for HDMF package (required dependency of newer pynwb) to
get uploaded. If it doesn't get through somehow in a week (which is
probably what will happen), I will just adopt your patch for the current
version and upload that one.
