After thinking about this a bit and reviewing old discussions, I think
that using the alternatives mechanism is better than doing some sort of
transition. I have prepared a patch to src:unclutter to implement that,
and also I've prepared packaging of unclutter-xfixes which calls
update-alternatives(1).

Although unclutter-xfixes will work better for a lot of people,
classic unclutter is working perfectly fine for other people, and there
seems no need to impose a transition on the second group if it's not
needed to benefit the first.
