I wonder if it wouldn't be a better idea to document such changes (where
we divert from upstream or make explicit decisions which are not the
upstream defaults) in systemd's README.Debian.

This seems like a more maintainable approach then patching man pages.
Those patches are bound to require on-going maintenance work to keep
them updated.
