I think it's possible, but you may need to ask the backports@ mailing list. OTOH, and while i understand supporting stable users is important, i dont think backports should be seen as a way to prevent progress in the unstable distribution, it's unstable for a reason: it allows us to make big changes in preparation for the next stable release.
