Because the Hurd doesn't yet have sound support, flite FTBFS. As a result, brltty doesn't compile either (and only for that reason). Maybe --with-audio=oss should be replaced by --with-audio=none when $(DEB_HOST_ARCH) equals hurd-i386? (flite compiles fine with that change).
