there seems to be a fork of ares called c-ares, available on: http://daniel.haxx.se/projects/c-ares/ This distribution seems to be actively maintained. Would you like to package it RSN and maybe replace libares with libcares (jeez, sounds like Caries ;-)? If not, please reassign to WNPP as RFP.
