I noticed that this behaviour originates from firejail which happened to wrap "less" through a symlink "/usr/local/bin/less" to "/usr/bin/firejail", which was once installed by firecfg. However, there was no such link for man itself. I could solve the issue by either starting man in firejail right away (`firejail man ls`), or by removing the link for less in "/usr/local/bin/less".
