hmmm... doesn't look the same problem actually, but let me better
understand:
- does udev create the correct /dev/input/event nodes?
- does the output of 'cat /proc/bus/input/devices' differs between your
  self-compiled kernel and debian's? (also which kernel spits the
  above one -I suppose the failing kernel- ?)
- could you eventually send me the log of a 'startx -- -logverbose 8'
  session of a failing run?
- and last but not least, could you send your full XF86Config-4
