This should be fixed in reportbug 7.6.0. It wasn't a solution because it broke the version checking, as you noted. Hopefully with the new reportbug the incomplete workaround is no longer needed. Reportbug could be taught to strip off any M-A qualifier before querying new versions, but I'm not sure it is worth implementing that since ideally everything should just work without the qualifier in the first place.
