Our previous image build tool contained a script named test-package-selection. This tool was useful to quickly check if the specified sources list entries exist and the list of packages can be installed without conflicts. This was done by configuring the apt sources list, running "apt-get update" and then "apt-get install --simulate" with the list of selected packages. Executing this script took only a few seconds and gave us the confidence that the build process will most likely succeed.
