I don't know the exact reason ssm used for choosing debconf over update-alternatives back in 1999 (but it was a conscious choice, he started out with u-a) Alternatives doesn't provide any debconf integration with all the features that include such as preseeding and explaining what the choice is about. If it grew those abilities, I think switching to that would be interesting. -- Tollef Fog Heen UNIX is user friendly, it's just picky about who its friends are
