Eh, forgot the actual error:

dpkg-genbuildinfo: error: binary build with no binary artifacts found; 
.buildinfo is meaningless
dpkg-buildpackage: error: dpkg-genbuildinfo --build=any subprocess returned 
exit status 255


I’ve found out a bit since then:

$ dh -v build
dh: warning: No packages to build. Possible architecture mismatch: x32, want: 
alpha amd64 arm64 armel armhf hurd-i386 i386 ia64


So, dh indeed fails to parse debian/control correctly *and* fails to
abort on the parse failure.
