I think that is an excelent idea. My personal recommendation would be to continue to run awstats update at regular intervals, and then to run awstats_build_staticpages less frequently, as it can be slow, and frequent updates can be wasteful. In my case I run it early each morning, making the previous days stats available. There's not much more to it, but please feel free to contact me should you have any further questions. I actually filed the first ITP for awstats, but didn't have the experience at the time to package it in a timely fashion. Which is just to say, I would love to be involved with the Debian package inasmuch as such is possible.
