Ah, checked directory.fsf.org just now... didn't know you were
co-maintainer with Kai. :)

Can't remember, it's been there for a long time (and it would solve
the remote login only anyway (which I'm trying right now, again)).

/su:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/ gets me a *debug...* buffer of

# Opening connection for `root' `using su'...
# Waiting for prompts from remote shell
# Waiting 60s for prompt from remote shell
# Sending password

And the *tramp...* buffer says

# ^M^Msanctum ttypts/10 ~ #

That's an empty line, then a sharp with space... the first ^M (an
actual CR, not a "^M" ;) is in column 79. End of buffer is after the
last # and the following space. There's no LF at end of buffer. (I
edited it because copy/paste from Emacs made minced meat of it, and
that line would be too long anyway (or you wouldn't see those actual
CRs).

Hope this helps.

Bye, J

PS: Tried remote logins again, with explicit ssh: method and without.
Worked for both boxes I tried it on. Would be a possible workaround
for local, since I don't remote-login here anyway. But, strangely,
same version 2.0.52 works on another box w/o problems.

Purged and reinstalled tramp, to no avail. Head scratching ensues...
I wish I grokked tramp's source :)
