Where are these font.name and about:config preferences and how do I
change them? I can edit about:config in firefox, but I see nothing
about it in thunderbird and grepping the thunderbird directory for it
turns up nothing (except for this message).
In the fonts dialog of the thunderbird preferences, the monospace font
is set to monospace for the western language/charset. But, there is no
unicode/utf-8 choice here so I don't know how one would set fonts for
utf-8 charsets.

Jason, can you confirm that this helps?

Re: Bug #359763
Bug Summary: Gray, difficult-to-read fonts in Thunderbird.
Removal of package gsfonts is not necessary. This bug seems to be the
result of certain default about:config preference values in thunderbird.
Specifically, the following preferences:
font.name.*.x-central-euro
font.name.*.tr
font.name.*.x-unicode
font.name.*.x-user-def
For entries where * is "monospace", changing the preference value from
"Courier" to "monospace" solves the font display issue.
Is there a reason why "Courier", "Helvetica" and "Times" are default
values for these preferences instead of "monospace", "sans-serif" and
"serif"?
Should future versions of thunderbird have the latter?
