I would consider this a poor design choice. However, this design is
inconsistent. If I use "-vo null", i.e. only play audio, then
everything works as I expect, i.e. the audio continues running. 

To summarize:
*) With video: audio breaks down when switching to VT
*) Without video: audio continues when switching to VT

I believe there is a bug somewhere, although I hope in the future
audio will always continue playing.
