.config is the XDG standard place for config in the Free Desktop
standards
(http://standards.freedesktop.org/basedir-spec/basedir-spec-0.6.html)

.xfce4 won't be used by the 4.2.x versions.

Can you give us the output of:
ls /usr/lib/xfce4/mcs-plugins/
please?

I suspect it's some plugin that's crashing it but I can't really be
sure.  I've not seen any other reports of this but it could be yet more
new glib memory allocator fallout.
