ttf-freefont can easily interfere fontconfig by getting high priority in font selection, while it provides bad metrics for Thai. It's kind of compromise with Latin font metrics, causing the lines to be clipped. I'm sure this also affects many other languages with similar characteristic. So, a sensible solution is to remove ttf-freefont to let local fonts show up in fontconfig. However, this is prevented by vlc's dependency on it.
