On typical Debian systems, I'd expect the kernel and its modules to be installed via a package. In any case, linux-image-$ARCH is only a soft dependency: It is pulled in via a Recommends from supermin: $ aptitude why linux-image-amd64 […] i A libguestfs0 Depends supermin (>= 5) i A supermin Recommends linux-image-amd64 $ You can configure apt to ignore Recommends when installing libguestfs-tools.
