Thank you - you are quite correct, it does have the dependency, so I am not sure why it was not pulled in. I had just upgraded my system from buster, and it was a big upgrade, as this system has been running since wheezy, upgraded though jessie and stretch and has a lot of packages, so this will probably not be reproducible - but if someone else hits the same symptoms they should be able to use the same workaround, but clearly not actually a gscan2pdf bug
