I don't know (and that's the reason why I said that they might share information), but I'd guess that some of the HTML rendering could be shared, since thunderbird renders (the unfortunate) HTML mail. Now that I think about it, perhaps their visual information/icons could be shared to, in order to provide a unified experience to the desktop user. But, then, this is a wishlist bug. I'm just brainstorming here...
