Quack, You're right, that's a big increase and I did not realize.
After some digging it seems this is due to compiling with _FORTIFY_SOURCE (you can see the difference popping up between 1.7.2-1 and -2). Some folks suggest enabling LTO. I'm not familiar with all this so I need some more digging and testing.
