After testing octave --gui on a fresh Debian installation, I noticed that octave complains about being unable to load FreeSans OTF font when trying to create a simple 2D plot. As a result, nothing is plotted. Installing fonts-freefont-otf package resolved the problem.

Possibly, a depends or recomends is missing?

octave depends on octave-common, which itself recommends fonts- freefont-otf. So I don’t understand why fonts-freefont-otf was not installed on your system.

Perhaps he has this setting in his configuration:

APT::Install-Recommends "false";

In any case, I don’t see what should be changed at the octave level

We could change the Recommend into Depends. Of course, Octave can be used without plotting, but most users would expect that plotting works out of the box.

Best,

Rafael
