I can see that xscreensaver now recommends bitmap fonts (xfonts-100dpi)
while it supports scalable fonts. Scalable fonts are of better quality,
thus should be used by default and xfonts-100dpi should not be needed
in the default configuration, and users should not have bitmap fonts
installed automatically (except by packages that support only X fonts).
Bitmap fonts are also hardly readable on HiDPI screens.

Note 1: If the user wishes to use alternative fonts, it is up to him to
install them.

Note 2: Having bitmap fonts installed can badly affect some applications
that try to find the "best" font (e.g. based on supported glyphs, even
when such glyphs are actually not useful for the user). For instance:
